a Outdoor Performance

PLAY © Matthias Wäckerlin

Driven by the powerful sound of a one-woman band, four dancers surprise the audience on their journey through different states of play. Between order and chaos, emergence and disappearance, they question notions of community, power, and risk and seek the immediacy of the intimate and potentially dangerous body. Gravity meets weightlessness, density meets permeability, falling meets flying. PLAY combines dance and live music to create an interdisciplinary open-air performance in the midst of the audience.

A production by Mirjam Gurtner co-produced by Theater ROXY Birsfelden and 48-Stunden Neukölln, supported by: Fachausschuss Tanz und Theater BS/BL, Hauptstadtkulturfonds Berlin, Stanley Thomas Johnson Stiftung, Jacqueline Spengler Stiftung, Fondation Nestlé pour l'Art, Schweizerische Interpretenstiftung SIS, Stiftung Corymbo.
The reprise at the Performing Arts Festival Berlin takes place in the program of TATWERK | Performative Research and is supported by the Fonds Darstellende Künste with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media within the framework of NEUSTART KULTUR.
With the support of Pro Helvetia - Swiss Arts Council.
Mediapartner is TAZ. Die Tageszeitung

Biography

Mirjam Gurtner studied dance at the Theater Basel, the Vienna State Opera, the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, and Trinity Laban London. In 2021 she was awarded the June Johnson Newcomer Prize as part of the Swiss Dance and Theatre Awards. Her artistic practice explores improvisation, real-time composition, and the correlation between sensory perception and physicality. In interdisciplinary collaborations, she explores the relationship between the audience and the moving body in different spatial contexts, staging her work in theatre, museum, or public space. Mirjam is a teacher of improvisation and inclusive dance and leads international inclusive and intercultural dance projects.
Her most recent series of works, PLAY, premiered in 2021 at Theater ROXY Birsfelden and KINDL Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst Berlin. Since then, PLAY has been restaged site-specifically for the 48-Stunden-Neukölln Festival in Berlin, as well as a national Swiss tour as part of Tanzfest 2022 outdoors, and shown as a long-term performance at Kunsthalle Palazzo Liestal in 2023. A new site-specific performance is being created for the inclusive Forward Dance Company of the LOFFT Theatre Leipzig for autumn 2023.
Previous works include the inclusive work ALMOST HOME, which premiered in 2022 at the STEPS dance festival in Zurich and Geneva in a hotel, and SKINNED, presented at Sophiensaele Berlin, Theater ROXY Birsfelden, 48-Stunden-Neukölln, Novosibirsk Centre for Visual Arts and Chapelle du Quartier Haut in Sète.
