AS TURNING THE GLOVES
One of the main female dancer of the founder of butoh Tatsumi Hijikata, Saga Kobayashi is visiting Berlin from Japan and giving 3 a days workshop, video screening & talk, and presenting a performance. It is a precious opportunity to hear and learn about the works of Hijikata in the end of 1960s and the beginning of 1970s, and find inspiration for our own contemporary creations.
About the workshop:
I believe that it is basically not possible to teach butoh to anyone, because butoh is always very individual experience, because I believe that it is about confronting and facing with oneself sincerely and that is the only way to reach some point.
We could say that it is like “turning gloves inside out”, to let our inner reality emerges.
First, we must descend back to our own body. There we will discover numerous body perceptions that becomes important core of each butoh. And I wish that such experience will sink deeply within each, and wish that each unique dance expressions will emerge from there. This organ called “Body” contains enormous memories and is fulfilled with unknown. Instead of “studying”, I would like you to experience the unknown by yourself. This workshop is the guidance for such journey.
Tatsumi Hijikata explored body with such questions:
“What is your calf thinking at the moment? What about the back of your head? Or the tip of the nail? What about the tip of your hair?”
Contents of the workshop:
- Past, present, and future of Butoh
- The relationship between words and body
- The importance of unconsciousness ( Aura Hysterica )
- Choreography and Improvisation
- Alienated body
- Multiplying body perception (ex. Keeping countless earthworms in the body)
- Dialogue with the space / Japanese affinity to space
- Being aware of the texture of the body before the movement
- Body as an object, as a material
- Developing five senses with the exercise such as Walking of the blind, Walking of the mask, etc.
The workshop will end with the presentation of a performance.

She played an important role in establishment of Hijikata's Butoh in the 1970s by joining in his important work “Twenty-Seven Nights for Four Seasons”, which is called as a culmination of Hijikata’s Butoh. In 1983 she went on the tour in Europe with Yoko Ashikawa to bring the piece choreographed by Tatsumi Hijikata.
Afterwards she became independent and founded the butoh company, Comet Club, in search of her own Butoh. Beside her own performances, she makes wide range of activities beyond genre, such as collaboration with music, video, theater and so on. She is also cooperating with data compilation activity of Tatsumi Hijikata Archive at Keio University Art Center, and has been giving lecture and workshop at several Universities of art and theater.
Lately, she started “Butoh AURA series”, in search of the boundary of human consciousness and unconsciousness with the text Aura Hysterica.
