THE SENSES OF BUTOH

WORKSHOPS
Date: 16 November 2019 10:00

© Martina Tahlhofer / Tchivett

an intensive week end workshop on somatics and butoh dance

“In the water of the belly
they were unfolding, they were touching, they were exploring
pushing the foot against a point of momentum, they were gravitating
they were turning and turning around,
in the shadow,
they were dancing almost.

Suddenly they are dancing for real
suddenly they irrupt
in the light, in the cold, in the air,
and there they fall,
they collapse into decoordination, into non-motricity, into muscular failure,
they are leaking under themselves
they are no longer fetuses, they became infants invaded by breath,
immersed into the luminous air and the hearing a spoken thongue they do not know.”

Pascal Quigniard _ Danse perdue in L’origine de la danse (2013)

Our senses are an ancient and very primordial bodily experience.
With a mindful somatic approach we will explore deep in the body, through the door of the senses to states of heightened embodiment and awareness.
From there, how do sensations transform into movement?
As we go on a journey into organic consciousness, how do we create a connection to the inner landscape ?
How does a shift of perspective affect the sense of self ?
As we connect to the present of our perception, the mind can release from thoughts and habitual identification patterns, a space is opening to get in touch with the immanent flow of the body and the imagination transforming.
The dance becomes a bridge between here and elsewhere, between the physical reality we feel and the body memories of other times and other places being actualised, Ma (time-space) and Nikutai (the bodily inner landscape). The poetics of butoh unfold in this in-between space.

Our body remembers and if we let it, it teaches us the dance of the embryo bathing in vibrations of distant muffled sounds, dancing to a song they ear from within, the dance of the new born who just opened their eyes and senses gravity for the first time, the dance of the dying elder whose senses are fading, blind & dancing with memories.

Tchivett originally studied Chinese martial and energetic arts along with Butoh dance.
They are a performer, dance maker and teacher since 2011, studied many other contemporary dance forms and completed the Choreography Masters degree at HZT in 2018.
Their piece « Hollow Matters » was presented in 2019 at the Tanztage festival in Berlin at Sophiensaele.
Their performance and choreographic work focuses on the plasticity of the body and the intersection of sculpture and dance.
They’re keen on fine qualities of relationship between bodies, spaces and audiences ; creating social situations and sensitive atmospheres and exploring at the border with visual arts and installation.
As an interpreter, among others, he has danced for re-enactments by Hanna Halprin and Marina Abramovic, the choreographic pieces by Atsushi Takenouchi and Annabel Guérédrat, and in Berlin with Shannon Cooney, Jolika Südermann and Josep Caballero.
They regularly teaches butoh, contact improvisation and somatic practice at the Tanzfabrik and the Village e.V in Berlin. They also contributed to various dance research and performance collectives (Danses bizarres, CORPOL, Collective matters, etc.) with a focus on queer culture, feminist politics and self-organization.
