Artwork Neighborhood Commitee of Care
Tatwerk

Artistic residency at TATWERK and in Volkspark Hasenheide

NEIGHBORHOOD COMMITEE OF CARE is a cooperation project between TATWERK in Berlin, Milano Mediterranea in Milan and Szendvicsbár in Budapest. In 2025, Neighbourhood Committees will be formed in all three cities, which will meet regularly to discuss their neighbourhood and decide together what kind of artistic project should be implemented there.

In Berlin, the Neighbourhood Committee of Care (NCC) will focus on Volkspark Hasenheide. This means that the NCC is made up of people who are connected to Hasenheide in one way or another and that the NCC will choose an artistic project that deals with the park.

What are important topics that are dealt with in the microcosm of the Hasenheide?
How can your artistic work be a space for discussion for public debates or uncover unexpected ways of recognising critical points or finding possible solutions?

The Open Call is looking for projects that deal with Volkspark Hasenheide as an urban space with its inherent diversity, and want to enter into dialogue with the people who use the park. There are no restrictions in terms of art, genre, or language. Relieved of the pressure of »having to produce«, artists can deepen and consolidate existing practices or explore new approaches during the residency period.

Residency period: August 04th to 22nd 2025

Who we are looking for

  • Individual artists
  • Artists who live and work in Berlin
  • Artists with a research interest in public space, urban green spaces and the relationship between humans and nature as well as power relations within the urban fabric
  • preferably an artist, who has not yet worked with TATWERK but is interested in a sustainable relationship with TATWERK
  • preferably an artist who is usually excluded from funding due to discrimination

Artists who are currently / at the time of the residency enrolled at a university are not eligible to apply.

What we offer

  • Scholarship of € 2000 for the entire residency period
  • Budget for material costs, to be agreed
  • Access to the TATWERK studio (3 weeks: the 4th to 22nd of August)
  • Kick-off meeting with the NCC in the Hasenheide (24th of July) as well as regular mentoring and dramaturgical advice from the curatorial team

  • one-off professional photo and video documentation of the residency for further use
  • Participation to the final network event of NCC in Milan on October 18th - 19th 2025

How we select

The selection of the residency artist will be made by the NCC. The process is led by the residency curatorial team, Aurora Kellermann and Aru Ray Tormann with the participation of the partners in Milan and Budapest.
The most important selection criteria are:

  • Relevance of the project to the neighbourhood and its inhabitants (represented by the NCC)
  • Accessibility of the process
  • Artistic concept for the implementation of the proposed research project and realistic demonstration of own competence to address the issues described
  • Capacity and tools for territorial engagement
  • Capacity for dialogue with the different communities
  • Feasibility of the concept
  • Resource awareness

Checklist

  • The focus of your work is in Berlin.
  • You are not enrolled at a university.
  • You are available during the entire residency period and for the kick-off meeting on July 24th.

Application deadline: April 17th 2025
