Dance residency at TATWERK and in Hasenheide

The UNKNOWN GEOGRAPHIES residency programme focuses on somatic and choreographic practices in conversation with public space and nature. The residency will hold Volkspark Hasenheide and the studio at TATWERK as the working locations, allowing the physical dimensions of urban space to be explored in depth. The curatorial focus of UKNOWN GEOGRAPHIES is somatic and choreographic practices that link urban ecology with post-human insights and inclusive concepts of agency. We seek to deepen geographies of movement, sound and human, and non-human narration. In this way, research and projects will be addressing ecologically sustainable and socially-just concepts that value and promote the diversity of human and non-human experience and expression.

Depending on their own practice and interests, artists can focus on different aspects within the UNKNOWN GEOGRAPHIES. During the residency, artists should explore any aspect of the park that calls them and incorporate the local context. UNKNOWN GEOGRAPHIES supports artists who can relate choreographic and somatic research approaches to the environment, community, and neighbourhood and who embark on a search for new perspectives on our surroundings. Relieved of the pressure of »having to produce«, the artists can further deepen and consolidate established practices or find the space to explore new practices during the residency period.

Residency period: July 7th to August 1st 2025

Who we are looking for

  • Individual artists or artist groups of a maximum of 4 people
  • Artists who live and work in Berlin
  • Artists whose work focuses on dance
  • Artists with a research interest in public space, urban green spaces and the relationship between people and nature as well as power relations within the urban fabric
  • preferably artists who have not yet worked with TATWERK but are interested in a sustainable relationship with TATWERK
  • preferably artists who are usually excluded from funding due to discrimination

Unfortunately, artists who are enrolled at a university at the time of the residency cannot apply.

What we offer

  • Scholarship of € 2000 per artist for the entire residency period
  • Access to the TATWERK studio (3 weeks: 14th of July to the 1st of August)
  • Kick-off walk in the Hasenheide (7th of July) as well as regular mentoring and dramaturgical advice from the curatorial team
  • Links to the TATWERK networks for the continuation of research and production
  • one-off professional photo and video documentation of the residency for further use

How we select

The residency artist or artist group is selected by the residency's curatorial team, Aurora Kellermann and Aru Ray Tormann, in collaboration with various initiatives active in Volkspark Hasenheide.
The most important selection criteria are:

  • Consistency with the research focus of UNKOWN GEOGRAPHIES
  • Artistic concept for the realisation of the proposed research project and realistic representation of the own competence to work on the described questions
  • Relevance for the local communities
  • Feasibility of the concept
  • Resource awareness

Depending on the situation of the applications, we will award one to two residencies to enable a total of up to four artists to take part in a residency. In the case of two parallel residencies, the studio at TATWERK will be shared by the groups. We are happy to support the process of making good arrangements for the use of the studio.

Checklist

  • All artists must be active in the field of dance
  • All artists must live and work in Berlin (are they registered in Berlin?)
  • None of the artists are currently enrolled at a university
  • Availability during the entire residency period

Application deadline: April 17th 2025

All artists will receive feedback by the end of May as to whether they have been selected for the residency.
